OUR HISTORY
BOND - Building Our Nation’s Daughters, Inc. was founded in 2015 after our founder, Ateira Griffin, realized a disconnect between black single mothers and daughters, the academic and social-emotional wellbeing of the daughters, and the lack of personal development support for single mothers while working as Dean of Students at The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women. This prompted her to research what supports would be helpful in cultivating positive bonds between single mothers and daughters while also providing two-generation experiences for black single mothers and daughters to learn together. In 2016, BOND received its first grant as a Warnock Foundation Social Innovation Award recipient. We held our first single mother-daughter brunch bringing the community together to share in their experiences and shape BOND’s programming.
Later that year we launched our first pilot in partnership with The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women. To date, we have mentored over 250 single moms in the Baltimore community and provided services for over 1000. In 2019, we were awarded the Echoing Green fellowship to further our work and most recently our CEO was awarded the Open Society Institute Community Fellowship in 2020.
In 2020 we expanded our school community partners to include three schools, Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson Charter School, and Booker T. Washington Middle School. We continue to support black single mothers and daughters in social-emotional, academic, and economic growth today.
